Orlando's Thornton Park neighborhood has been named one of the nation's best places for families and first-time home buyers by This Old House magazine.
A total of 51 best old-house neighborhoods are listed in the magazine's March issue, which hits newsstands and at thisoldhouse.com/best-places Friday.
Criteria used in selecting the neighborhoods include architectural diversity, craftsmanship of the homes, preservation momentum and amenities such as walkability, safety and community.
Thornton Park offers affordable historic homes on oak-shaded, brick-paved streets, a vibrant hub of restaurants and shops, and a friendly atmosphere, the magazine reports. It also is within walking distance of downtown Orlando and Lake Eola, an urban oasis of green spaces and jogging paths. And Walt Disney World is just a 25-minute drive away.
Best known for its wood-frame cracker-style homes with center hallways and deep porches, Thornton Park also has a sprinkling of in the Craftsman, Mediterranean and American Foursquare styles. Home prices range from under $200,000 to about $700,000.
